, that obama won and really cleaned the republicans' clock on the whole thing because he ends up getting the tax rate increases that he wanted. on the other hand, you do have another debt line coming in in about two months according to timothy geithner and that is the increase in the debt ceiling. the republicans hold most of the leverage because they can at least threat ton send the country into default unless there are serious and major spending cuts. at that point does this obama victory perhaps look a little different? >> the question is are they going to want to do what they did last time with the debt ceiling which ultimately caused us to have a downgrade of our economy. i think it is a bit of bluffing. i don't think they really rant to do that. in terms of the president winning, he has won, though, he is going to catch a lot of grief as byron was alluding to from the left for if he goes up to $400,000 for example. they think he should stick at 250. they don't want any kind of social security cuts and that is on the table right now apparently in the new deal. in that sense he will

is basically launching this public campaign to pressure republicans. president obama came out on friday and urged them to get behind his plans. again today he sat down with david gregory, of course, during that exclusive interview on "meet the press" and urged republicans to act saying that it appears all they are interested in is protecting taxes for wealthy americans. republicans, by the way, lashed out at those comments saying the president seems more interested in placing blame instead of actually leading, but that at this point in time seems to be president obama's strategy to some extent, publicly pressuring republicans to act and to move on these negotiations. so that is where this stands right now. the white house monitoring everything that's going on the hill quite closely, but i can tell you, melissa, that there is a sense of optimism that is waning here at the white house. you can sense that when you talk to the officials here. >> well, the eternal optimist. vice president joe biden apparently dropped by the white house today. do you know if he and the president have spoken?

to get to a deal. in some sense, i think the republicans got played a little bit, because president obama was the first one to introduce chained cpi, social security cuts into the conversation. and then democrats just erupted today when republicans reintroduced them. as they should have, because social security cuts are -- they don't contribute to the deficit, they're not part of the sequester. so it's unclear why they would be part of the bargain. and it's not social security this would hit, it would hit veterans and spouses of soldiers who died in combat. so if that's the way congress thinks it ought to balance the budget, by cutting the pensions for widows of soldiers, that's where we are now. >> chris, i respectfully disagree with ryan here. yes, there's a lot of pessimism among reporters here, but at the end of the day, when you talk to staffers in democratic and republican circles, all sides want to extend middle class tax rates. that rate discussion, to get to a threshold, $250,000, hopefully 400,000 if you're a conservative or republican, that is going to drive the deal. so the qu

the republicans ran against in 2010 and 2012, it was obama medicare cuts. obama addressing medicare. social security, a lot of people would argue there's no actual social security crisis in terms of kriting to the deficit, yet obama in his last offer to the republicans was willing to go along with the version of this chained cpi. it would basically be a benefit cut. basically be a benefit cut and there's a lot of frustration, on the left, i would say, look, obama has done things here that really irritate us and where is that similar compromise coming from on the right? where are the ideas on the right for further entitlement cuts and changes beyond that? >> a lot of us as amy pointed out, are terrified about the economic impact, the budget impact will be as obama care gets implemented. the president to ris credit ran on tier taxes for the rich. he said he was going to do it and now he won the election and he's doing it. if they raise taxes on those 400 thigh, or million, it is a tax increase but that's an issue that they'll have to fight out. that 1990 budget tax increase still scars the re

was just reporting. president obama says either a deal is reached or you vote on the short-term stop gap measure. if republicans fail to pass it i'm summarizing it's their fault. so the president kind of tossing the ball into the republican's camp, placing blame on them. in your opinion s that presidential leadership? >> the republicans have gone after the president that he has deferred to congress on this is that he was unable to strike a deal between -- with speaker boehner and now it is to reid and mcconnell. on one hand, obama is criticizing the congress but also giving them the responsibility to come up with a deal. this is on his watch. obama does not want this going into next year. he wants to move quickly on immigration and energy and maybe gun control. so, but he has not been able to strike a deal with the speaker and that is -- you know, takes two to tango, both have to compromise. both have failed repeatedly on getting a debt deal both in the summer of 2011 and now. how to it is up to the senate which up until recently has been shoved to the side. can they come to the rescue.
